This wikiHow teaches you how to delete both single messages and entire conversations in the Facebook Messenger app for iPhone and Android smartphones. Deleting a message or conversation from your Messenger app does not remove the message or conversation from the other recipient's (or recipients') Messenger app(s).
-
1
Open Facebook Messenger. Tap the Messenger app icon, which resembles a white bolt of lightning in a blue speech bubble. This will open Messenger's main page if you're logged into Messenger.
- If you aren't logged in, tap Continue as [Name], or enter your phone number and password.
-
2
Make sure that you're on the "Home" tab. If Facebook Messenger opens a conversation, tap the "Back" button in the top-left corner of the screen to go back to the "Home" tab.
- If Messenger opens to a different tab (e.g., People), tap the house-shaped Home tab that's in the bottom-left corner of the screen before proceeding.
-
3
Select a conversation. Tap the conversation from which you want to delete a message. This will open the conversation.
-
4
Find a message. Look for the message that you want to delete.
-
5
Tap and hold the message. Doing so will prompt a pop-up menu to appear at the bottom of the screen after a moment.
-
6
Tap Delete . It's a trash can-shaped icon in the menu at the bottom of the screen.
-
7
Tap Delete Message when prompted. Doing so will remove the message from your side of the conversation, though the other person (or people) will still be able to see the message unless they've also deleted it.
- You can repeat this process for as many individual messages as you like, but there is no way to delete multiple individual messages at once without deleting the whole conversation.

Question
How can I delete a message that was sent but not delivered? When I try Messenger tells me it can't be deleted.
After a message has been sent, you'll only be able to delete it on your end. Even if you are able to delete it, the other person will still be able to see it when they open the Messenger app or log into Facebook. The reason a message may be showing as "Sent" but not "Delivered" is because the person is not logged into Facebook anywhere. Once they open their Messenger app or login into Facebook, the message will be delivered.

Question
I do not want to install the Messenger app to check my Facebook messages from my phone, yet every time I try to pull up my messages or send a message, it wants me to install the app. What can I do?
If you're on a mobile device, you can no longer view or send messages using your Facebook app. If you don't want to install Messenger, you can still access your messages from the Facebook mobile site, but you won't be able to delete anything from there.
-
Question
Can I delete a message that I've sent so that the person I've sent it to can no longer see it?
No, once you send a message in Facebook, the other person will always be able to see it. There is no way to retract or delete a message after sending it so that the other person won't see it.
-
Question
Can I recover a deleted message on Messenger?
No. Once your message has been deleted, it is gone forever.
-
Question
When I've read all my messages on Facebook, how do I delete them all at once?
